Local man arrested for the murder of celebrity author Jilly Bramley.

Stunned to the core, Ruth sank into her chair and reread the words on the screen. She glanced up at James and shrugged. “This has floored me. I just don’t know how to react, not without using expletives anyway. That inspector is a …well, I’ll leave you to fill in the blanks.

James reached across the table and wrapped both hands around hers. “We’ll get to the bottom of this, Ruth. I’ll help you all I can.”

“How? She specifically pointed out that if you interfered you’d be sacked. We can’t risk that. We need your income to keep us afloat when my business is slow.”

“I know. But I can’t sit back and watch them arrest an innocent man.”

“What can we do about it?” Ruth asked, surprising even herself when she uttered the words. Usually, there was no stopping her when she felt an injustice had been served.

James smiled. “You can finish cooking the breakfast, and then we’ll continue to do what we planned on doing: writing a list of possible suspects and their likely motives. And then I think we should take a trip to the hotel and start asking some questions of our own.”

“But it’s a crime scene. It’ll probably be shut off to the public, won’t it? At least for the next day or two.”

A twinkle developed in his eye. “You’re grief-stricken and desperate to share your condolences with Jilly’s family and friends, aren’t you?”

She left her seat and ruffled his hair on the way back to the stove. “You’re not just a pretty face after all.”

“Gee, thanks. Do you want me to take Ben out after breakfast while you get ready? The sooner we get down to the hotel the better.”

“That would be smashing. Okay, all the doom and gloom has dissipated now. Our main aim is to question everyone at the hotel who was either at that party or serving the guests last night.”

A low whistle left James’ lips. “That could take us weeks. We need to narrow that list down to friends and family for now.”

“Okay, maybe I’m guilty of letting my enthusiasm get the better of me there. Perhaps you should rephrase that to friends, family and foes in that case.”

“Ah, I get where you’re going. It would appear she’d made a number of enemies over the last few days at the hotel. We just need to put a name to those people and ask the right questions.”

Ruth withdrew two plates from the cupboard and dished up the breakfast as the toast popped up. “That’s going to be really tough, unless people are willing to add names to our suspect list. Every time I entered the hallway last night, I heard her shouting at someone. I haven’t got a clue who the recipients of her anger were, though. Do you really think people are going to admit they were at the wrong end of a tongue-lashing, aware that the police could bring them in for questioning?”

“I understand what you’re saying, but you’re a pro.
